An evening you chose for yourself

A free evening can disappear into other people's plans or into indecision. Try choosing one thing you would genuinely like to make or learn, and give it a little room.

Choose before the evening begins

Pick one project with a clear first step: thread the machine, set out a sketchbook, choose a garden bed to plan, or read the first chapter of a guide. Keep it small enough to begin tonight. Set out what you need before dinner.

Protect the time kindly

If an invitation comes along, you can say, “That sounds fun. I’m going to stay in and work on something tonight.” A boundary can be simple and warm. You can make another plan when you want one.

Let the work be the evening

Give yourself an hour without a finish line. The aim is to notice whether you want to return tomorrow. At the end, leave a note about the next step so starting again feels easy.

A small prompt

What do you find yourself thinking about when you have a little unclaimed time? Begin there.

I hope this finds you well,

Scott
